A QR code (short for Quick Response) is a two-dimensional matrix barcode invented in Japan in 1994 by Denso Wave to track auto parts on Toyota's assembly lines. By the 2020s, QR codes were everywhere: restaurant menus, boarding passes, payments, product labeling, and vaccine passports.
Unlike a regular barcode, a QR code stores information both horizontally and vertically, so it can hold up to 7089 digits or 4296 characters. A QR code is made up of three corner position markers (finder patterns), a mask pattern that evens out the distribution of cells, data with error correction, and a white quiet zone around the edges.
The error correction level determines how well a QR code holds up to damage: L — 7% redundancy (smallest code), M — 15%, Q — 25%, H — 30% (maximum resilience, needed when you add a logo). At level H, the code stays readable even with 30% of its area damaged.
A regular barcode (EAN-13, UPC-A) is one-dimensional: data is encoded only in the widths of vertical bars, with a maximum capacity of 20 digits. A QR code is two-dimensional — it holds hundreds of times more data and can be scanned from any angle. QR codes have another advantage: built-in error correction recovers data even when the code is partially damaged, dirty, or worn. A barcode becomes unreadable with any damage at all.
